WHO WE ARE
Robin Butler, Baron Butler of Brockwell
"A guide and a waypoint":
Our patron, Lord Butler, explains what
St Mary's and its spire mean to him
"I grew up on Harrow Hill and St Mary’s was my parish church until my 20s.
I have memories of many happy and sad events there – christenings, weddings and funerals.
St Mary’s spire has been a guide and waypoint for over 500 years and I am delighted to give my support to Spirewatch, the charity which exists to preserve this irreplaceable landmark."
About us
The Friends of St Mary's was launched in 1945 and has been known as "Spirewatch" since 1981. It has always had a dual role, as a focus for fundraising and social events, and thus has always brought together a wonderful variety of people who love our landmark church. Some members live locally, some much further afield; some are members of the church congregation and others just cherish the peace and beauty of this place which has crowned Harrow Hill for over 925 years.
Every year, we sponsor events which support these social and fundraising aims. These include fun quiz nights, concerts and St Mary's Birthday Service in January. Please sign up to our mailing list to be first to hear about what's happening!
